What is the Stop and Wait Protocol in Computer Network?

While feeding different types of data to the system you might not realize a vital component and that is , whatever data you feed into a system, the system accepts it and provides an appropriate output for the same type of data. But how?

This is done with the help of data flow within the system. Having control over the data flow within the system is quite tricky for the system while handling different types of data.

To control the data flow, the system uses various techniques. The techniques used by the system aids it in regulating the flow of data and allow it to provide an output in accurate manner.

You might have read about various terms such as selective repeat protocol, sliding window, stop and wait protocol etc., when it comes to flow control mechanisms.

How about we start with the easiest and most convenient method of controlling the data flow, i.e. wait and stop protocol.

What is the Stop and wait protocol?

In simple terms, the stop and wait protocol allows the system to send and receive any type of data and transmit the output back.

Under the rules of this protocol, the sender sends a specific type of data in any form to the receiver. After which, he/she has to stop and wait for the revert back till the system processes it.

Once the system receives the data from the sender, it sends an acknowledgement for the same data packet.

One more thing to remember is that this protocol will only allow a unidirectional flow of data.

This means a sender can send specific data at a time, or the receiver will send the acknowledgement. Either way, only one data signal will pass through the systems simultaneously.
